Meeting Announcement: How to Analyze and Appreciate Paintings Our next meeting is a workshop on "How to Analyze and Appreciate Paintings." It is taking place on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 6:30 p.m. at the usual location (RSVP for directions). Warren will lead the discussion by reviewing Dianne Durante’s methodology described in the article “How to Analyze and Appreciate Paintings,” published in the Fall 2007 issue of The Objective Standard. This article presents a method of drawing the meaning of a painting from guided observation of concretes in the painting. Durante’s excellent tutorial presentation, grounded in a rational approach to epistemology (relating concretes to abstractions), will help us all improve our ability to observe and draw essential conclusions from a work of art. At the end of the article, an example is left to the reader to perform. We will analyze that example in this workshop, employing the methodology. Members attending this meeting should read the article beforehand. Warren has gotten permission to make copies of this article if you don’t have one. The article is forty-one pages and will cost him $3.28 to copy. When you RSVP, let me know if you need a copy of the article. If you request a copy, that will be taken as a commitment to reimburse Warren both for photocopying and for postage. You can reimburse Warren at the meeting. Since the copy of the article will be in black and white, you may want to do a Google search on each painting in order to see a color version of it. PLEASE RSVP IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO ATTEND EITHER MEETING.

Book Room Project HOS is continuing its Book Room Project in 2008. For the past four years, members have contributed over $10,000 for the purchase of classroom sets of Anthem and The Fountainhead to be placed in the Houston high schools that have the highest standardized test scores. As a result, we have placed 1,830 books in area schools; over the useful life of the books, this should translate into 18,300 students getting exposed to Ayn Rand's ideas. Last year we raised over $2100 dollars, which enabled us to supply Ayn Rand's books to several classrooms in the Houston area. This year, we decided to keep the same goal. If you would like to contribute, please do so at the next meeting or contact us for information on where to mail your check. |
